East Peoria was once a swampland. The swampland-town prospered and grew into the first incorporated village (known then as Hilton). The City of East Peoria was officially formed in April of 1919. This area was a thriving coal county thanks to a rich vein located near the surface. Several coal companies even set up shop in the community. East Peoria was also a transportation hub in the early 1900s, hosting 12 different railroad connections.
The city’s early roots, shaped its current condition even further when a heavy rain season (combined with Peoria’s natural terrain) caused creeks to overflow, flooding the city in 1927. Seasonal floods were a regular occurrence until 1948 with the inception of a flood control program. The program resulted in the construction of the Fondulac and Farmdale Dams, and adjustments to the width and dept of area lakebeds.
Notable people from East Peoria include Joe Girardi (major league baseball player and manager), Gary Richrath (songwriter and guitarist with REO Speedwagon), Sam Kinison (comedian), and Roger Phegley (former NBA player).
