History

East Peoria was once a swampland. The swampland-town prospered and grew into the first incorporated village (known then as Hilton). The City of East Peoria was officially formed in April of 1919. This area was a thriving coal county thanks to a rich vein located near the surface. Several coal companies even set up shop in the community. East Peoria was also a transportation hub in the early 1900s, hosting 12 different railroad connections.

The city’s early roots, shaped its current condition even further when a heavy rain season (combined with Peoria’s natural terrain) caused creeks to overflow, flooding the city in 1927. Seasonal floods were a regular occurrence until 1948 with the inception of a flood control program. The program resulted in the construction of the Fondulac and Farmdale Dams, and adjustments to the width and dept of area lakebeds.

Notable people from East Peoria include Joe Girardi (major league baseball player and manager), Gary Richrath (songwriter and guitarist with REO Speedwagon), Sam Kinison (comedian), and Roger Phegley (former NBA player).

Attractions and Traditions

Festival of Lights: If you love the holidays, you don’t want to miss the annual Festival of Lights which features a night-time parade (showcasing colorful holiday floats) and the Winter Wonderland drive-thru display. This show is celebrating 34 years of lighting up the holiday season this winter. If you enjoy fresh fruits and veggies, don’t forget to check out the seasonal Farmer’s Market held downtown. The market is open every Friday from June through September.

Parks and Activities

East Peoria has something for everyone, especially those who love to get outside and play. Boaters from across the country, canEast Port Marina dock at the EastPort Marina. The 280-slip marina welcomes travelers from April through October. Visitors can also enjoy swimming, hot tubs, and entertainment on site.

Families of all ages will enjoy Fon du Lac Farm Park. The property includes a large red barn, three ponds, live animals, playgrounds and a silo slide. For some traditional park fun, head to Neuman Park. Located at Neumann Drive, the large outdoor area includes a sand volleyball court, playground, covered picnic area, and large open area for flying kites, kicking a ball or relaxing with a book.

Fon Du Lac Golf Course is a par-3 course is nine holes and offers different options that are perfect for both the beginner golfer and more experienced players too.

Straddling East Peoria and Washington, the Quail Meadows Golf Course is a 72-par course with panoramic views of some of Illinois’s most beautiful land. This facility also includes an indoor golf center and golf simulators.

Also located at Fon Du Lac Park is access to the River Trail of Illinois. The scenic trail is open year-round and spans 9 miles along the Illinois River. The trail is open for walking, biking, skating, and cross-country skiing. It’s also wheelchair accessible.

Located at the nearby Illinois Central Community College, the Illinois Central College CougarPlex offers access to fitness facilities to students and community members.

EastSide CentreSports lovers will want to take in the Eastside Centre. The massive athletic facility hosts national, regional, and local tournaments in baseball, softball, track, volleyball and soccer. The facility also includes a football field and fitness center.

Dining, Shopping and Entertainment

Levee District: The Levee District is East Peoria’s newest shopping district. You’ll find major retailers like Target, Costco and Ross. There are a few dining options here as well like Red Robin, Chipotle, Panda Express and Chik-fil-A.

Located just a half-mile from the Levee District is Bass Pro Shops. This store is 150,000 square feet of outdoor goods. This store attracts millions of visitors every year and features an indoor aquarium with fish feedings, a waterfall, and giant animal statues. The shop also includes a restaurant (which features a massive saltwater aquarium), a bowling alley and workshops.

Looking for something fun to do? There is plenty of entertainment options in East Peoria. Check out local favorite is the Par-A-Dice Hotel and Casino. The casino is on a mega-yacht and has more than 900 slot machines and table games.

If you want to try something completely a little different, head to Roc Ice Cream and Golf. The 18-hole mini golf course also features a large ice cream parlor. 

There is a slew of tasty options for your next meal throughout East Peoria. Here are a few:

Jonah’s Seafood House and Oyster Bar: Jonah’s has served East Peoria for more than 30 years. Their menu includes various freshJonahs Seafood House fish dishes, shrimp, and steak. They also have a special menu featuring Oyster dishes like a raw oyster sampler.

Carl’s Bakery and Restaurant: Carl’s Bakery and Restaurant serves fresh donuts and wedding cakes. You can also grab a cheeseburger or roasted chicken for lunch.

Avanti’s Ristorante: This restaurant has five locations in Illinois, including one in East Peoria. You can grab an order of garlic bread or fill up on a specialty pizza or lasagna dinner. The restaurant offers catering and take-out orders.

Davis Brothers Pizza: This family-owned business has been serving East Peoria since 1948. The restaurant also sells their frozen pizza. Unique pizza offerings include TexMex and the Pickle ad Olive Pizza.

Burger Barge: Despite its name, this beach-themed restaurant serves more than just burgers. You can grab everything from shrimp skewers to chicken wings. The restaurant also has a margarita and cocktail menu.

Firehouse Pizza: The décor in this restaurant is as much fun as the food. Menu items include a variety of wings (including hot wings, boneless wings, and Backdraft wings), calzones, sandwiches, salad, and pizza.

Mickie’s Pizzeria: Voted one of the best places to eat on Thrillist, pizza lovers will want to make a stop here. Aside from their pizza, they also serve wings and sandwiches. They also serve “Cincinnati Chile,” a nod to the city’s famous dish.

Tequila’s Mexican Bar and Grill: Aside from the traditional Mexican fare, you’ll find some tasty desserts including Flan Napolitano (homemade vanilla custard), Choco Chimis, and Buñuelo.

The Galley at East Port: The cozy restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The American-style menu offers a variety of options for all ages.

Twistee Treat: This seasonal ice cream restaurant offers a variety of ice cream flavors as well as some lunch options (burgers, sandwiches and chicken strips). The ice cream place is open from late spring through early fall.

Popular chain restaurants in East Peoria include Logan’s Roadhouse, Texas Roadhouse and Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse.

Illinois Central College: Illinois Central College is a two-year college that offers students a chance to earn an associate of art, associates of science, associates of applied science, or an occupational certificate in various programs. There are 9,266 students enrolled on the campus. The college also has a campus in Peoria and Pekin.

Job Market

East Peoria is a mix of blue and white-collar jobs. Healthcare is the most highly represented industry in the community (16.2 percent of residents are employed in healthcare), followed by manufacturing (15.5 percent), and retail (12.3 percent.) Just over 9 percent of the residents work in the education sector, which makes sense, since East Peoria is home to the main campus of Illinois Central College. Just a five-ten minute commute to Peoria, residents enjoy access to plenty of work opportunities outside the community as well.
