History of Bartonville

The Village of Bartonville was incorporated in 1903. The suburban neighborhood covers about 8 square miles of land. Bartonville is named after W.C.H. Barton. The Barton family first settled the area in the early 1800s. At one time, the village had at least 11 saloons and played home to immigrant miners from Scotland, Ireland, England and Italy. The town was also home to the largest feed mill in the world during the 1920s.

Notable people

Some famous people got their start in Bartonville including Mike Dunne, a first round draft pick of the St Louis Cardinals in 1984 and a Silver Medal winner in the 1984 Olympics. 2018 Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee, Jim Thome, was born and raised in Peoria but went to Limestone Community High School in Bartonville.

Attractions and Traditions

Limestone Township Pool: Cool off in the heat of the summer at the Limestone Township Pool. The pool is located inside Alpha ParkLimestone Community Pool and opens on Memorial Day. The pool occasionally hosts special events and offers swim lessons.

Bartonville Fire Department Fish Fry: Get involved with the community at the annual fish fry. The event is usually held in August and spans three days. Activities include barbecues, live entertainment, and a carnival. Funds raised are used to help support the local fire department.

Alpha Park: This 18-acre park includes a softball complex with five softball fields, concession stands, a playground, public pool, and covered picnic areas.

Hammer’s Bar and Restaurant: This restaurant has been serving the community for almost 30 years. Locals enjoy heading here to catch big games and snack on foods like burgers, wings, and pizza. They have a kid’s menu too.

Bartonville Diner: Grab breakfast on a budget. Most of the meals here are less than $10, and they offer everything from omelets to waffles, pancakes, and skillets.

Dave’s Pizza: This neighborhood favorite serves pizza, wings, and stuffed sandwiches in a comfy diner environment. They also deliver.

Fairview Farms: Fairview Farms was established in 1952. The cozy restaurant offers home-cooked meals in a family-style dining atmosphere. All the food is made fresh from the salad dressing to the real mashed potatoes and homemade gravy. Dine-in visitors can order individual dinners or serve the group family style.

Tyroni’s Italian Cafe: You’ll have your choice of pasta, pizza, soups, salads, and calzones at this pizza joint. They also have a good Tyronis Italin Cafe dessert menu that includes turtle fudge cheesecake and fresh donuts.

Hollis Consolidated Grade School: Located at 5613 West Tuscarora Road, the school has 158 students with 13 classroom teachers, comprising grades kindergarten through eighth grade. 

Monroe School: Located at 5137 West Cisna Road, the school has 305 students with 21 classroom teachers, comprising grades pre-k through eighth grade. 

Limestone Walters Grade School: Located at 8223 West Smithville Road, the school has 194 students with 9 classroom teachers, comprising grades kindergarten through eighth grade. 

Oak Grove Grade School: Located 6018 W Lancaster Rd in Bartonville. Oak Grove consisted of two schools up until the start of the 2017-18 school year when two buildings became one. Oak Grove East was a K-4 elementary school and Oak Grove West was a 5-8 junior high school. The facilities were consolidated with the construction of a new elementary wing, 5th grade classrooms and an auxiliary gym. There are approximately 275 students and 45 staff members.

Job Market

While Bartonville is a smaller community, one of the more prominent companies in the community is Liberty Steel and Wire, which produces 700,000 tons of steel each year.
